The Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in 1861 was considered by both sides to be the beginning of the American Civil War. Constructed of brick and built on an artificial island to protect Charleston, South Carolina from naval invasion, Fort Sumter was severely damaged during the battle and left in ruins. The fort would have been one of the strongest forts in the world had it been completed. Today the fort is accessible by boat, and visitors can learn about the fort’s history and importance.
