Completed in 1742 as an outpost for the Spanish Empire, Fort Matanzas was built to guard the Matanzas Inlet and to warn St. Augustine of British forces and other enemies invading from the south. Today, Fort Matanzas National Monument preserves the fortified coquina watchtower and protects 300 acres of Florida coastal environment containing dunes, salt marsh, maritime hammock, and a variety of flora and fauna, including threatened and endangered species.
