Fort Frederica was built in the 1700s to protect the British colony of Georgia from Spanish raids. In 1742, British forces at the fort defeated the Spanish, ensuring that the Georgia colony would remain in British control. Fort Frederica National Monument, located on St. Simon’s Island in southeastern Georgia, is comprised of 284 acres preserving the fort and surrounding town.
