The Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program provides framework, funding, and publishing support to parks to aid in the synthesis and documentation of natural resource conditions. Condition assessment reports are a tool to describe selected park resources, record a snapshot of their current condition, identify trends in condition, and determine potential or current threats and stressors. Understanding the condition and trend of natural resources is key for parks and NPS planners to appropriately prioritize and allocate stewardship resources.

 

Devils Postpile.

About 100,000 years ago, hot basaltic lava flowing down a valley ran into a glacier. Together they formed what is known today as the Devils Postpile—a collection of hexagonal columns towering up to 60 feet. Located in California’s Sierra Nevada, Devils Postpile National Monument is comprised of 798 acres of pristine mountain habitat. Summer and fall visitors to the park enjoy hiking and fishing; with over 400 inches of snow annually, the park is closed in the winter and fall.
