A “city” of granite spires and monoliths, some reaching 60 stories tall, was an important landmark for emigrants traveling the California Trail in the mid-1800s. Located along the Utah border in south-central Idaho, the assembly of granite rising out of gently rolling sagebrush could be seen from miles away. Today, the City of Rocks National Reserve, also known as the Silent City of Rocks, lures climbers and other recreational enthusiasts to explore more than 14,000 acres of rocks and history.
