Preserving a relatively young (55,000 to 62,000 years old) cinder cone volcano, Capulin Volcano National Monument is located on 800 acres in northeastern New Mexico. The volcano stands more than 1,200 feet above the surrounding plains and is part of a volcanic field that includes over 100 volcanoes. Capulin Volcano’s highest point offers visitors unobstructed, panoramic views of four states (New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado). Visitors can drive the Volcano Road, which provides access to the top of the volcano, or hike a variety of trails.
