Antietam, the deadliest one-day battle in American military history, ended the Confederate Army’s first invasion into the North and gave Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. But the cost was high—more than 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing after the brutal 12-hour battle. Located in northwest Maryland on more than 3,200 acres, Antietam National Battlefield preserves the battle site and includes an 8.5-mile driving trail, visitor center, church, and several walking trails.
