What Trails Are Eligible

Benefitting a National Trail – The project must involve one or more national scenic, national historic, or national recreation trail that are components of the National Trails System related to the NPS. These trails include:

  • NPS Administered National Trails – Eligible projects include projects benefitting national scenic or national historic trails administered by the NPS. For projects or work benefitting an NPS-administered national scenic or national historic trail, the NPS (including the CTTP fund source) has authority to partner with other Federal agencies, States or their political subdivisions, Tribes, landowners, private organizations, or individuals to provide limited funding for operations, maintenance, and development.

  • Non-NPS Administered Trails – Eligible projects include projects benefitting non-NPS administered national scenic or historic trails through work or products on or for National Park Service lands, entities, or facilities.

  • National Recreation Trails – Eligible projects include projects benefitting trails designated as national recreation trails that are within the boundaries of, pass through, or connect to NPS managed or administered areas.
