1602: Sebastián Vizcaíno begins expedition along California coast
Sebastián Vizcaíno surveyed the coast of California in search of a good port and in preparation for settlement (in part to ward off incursions from the English and Dutch). His expedition led to the mapping of the California coastline and the settlement of Monterey Bay, the first capital of Spanish California.
