Teacher Resources: Chapter 10

Writing Prompts

Opinion: Karana experiences many different kinds of weather on the island. Using a Venn diagram and organizational structure, compare and contrast two different types of weather you have experienced yourself.

Informative/explanatory: Create a chart for the yearly weather and climate patterns of the region in which you live. You may modify this by creating a chart for the temperature pattern in the last month. You can find information from a reliable Internet source such as the Regional Climate Centers. Include formatting (e.g., headings).

Narrative: Write a story titled “A Stormy Day on San Nicolas Island.” Include descriptive details about how stormy weather might have affected people living on the island in the early 1800s (nineteenth century), when the Lone Woman was a child.
