The HBCU grant program puts the financial resources of the Historic Preservation Fund to work on the historic resources on the campuses of eligible colleges and universities. HBCUs have provided 180-plus years of academics, opportunities, and community throughout the United States. Today, 85 of the accredited HBCUs are eligible to receive grant funding to support the physical preservation of sites listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as well as the development of architectural plans and specifications, historic structure reports, campus preservation plans, and National Register nominations.
Since 1995, the National Park Service has invested more than $87 million in the historic resources of HBCUs, with more than $9 million in grant funding awarded in fiscal year 2022 alone. Between 2009 and 2017 no new grants were awarded under this program.
