Introduction

Remediation of safety and environmental issues at abandoned mineral lands is an expensive and important land management issue. Successful AML restoration projects require expertise and experience in mine engineering, park natural and cultural resources, and applicable law such as the National Historic Preservation Act. Small projects can be accomplished in-house by NPS staff. Large projects are usually conducted by contractors under NPS oversight.
