Contact: Jerry Willis Lighting Outages Planned This Week for the Statue of Liberty National Monument
The lighting system that illuminates the exterior of the Statue of Liberty will be temporarily turned off from 6 PM to 5 AM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week (May 2nd – 4th). The lights on the statue’s torch and crown will remain illuminated, drawing power from a small emergency back-up generator located within the monument. The exterior lighting outages are necessary to complete work required to activate a new emergency backup generator for Liberty Island. The generator was placed in a new resilient structure specifically built to house it above projected flood elevations. The generator project is among the last remaining Hurricane Sandy recovery projects slated for the island. The work is being conducted at night to avoid electrical outages during the day that would impact visitors and disrupt daily operations. The Statue of Liberty National Monument received over 4.5 million visitors last year. - NPS -
