Frequently Asked Questions

Is the National Historical Park the entire town?

Although the name of the park is the same as the town, the National Park Service is but one of many groups working to preserve Ste. Genevieve. Currently, the park service cares for three houses in town: Bauvais-Amoureux House, Green Tree Tavern, and Jean Baptiste Valle House.

Where is the park Visitor Center?

The park has its visitor information services within the town Welcome Center, at 66 S. Main Street, thanks to our friends at the City of Ste. Genevieve. The welcome center has maps and brochures, an introductory film and is where you sign up for house programs.

What programs does the park currently offer?

The park has both guided and self-guided offerings currently. To see inside one of our historic structures, check the calendar for our free ranger programs and sign up in the welcome center. For a self-guided experience take a walk on our grounds or complete our Junior Ranger program.

When was Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park established?

Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park was authorized in 2018 as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, and was established in October 2020. Check out "The Establishment of Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park" to learn more about how the park came to be.

When was the town founded?

The French first started farming the area in the 1730s and by 1750 the town of Ste. Genevieve was established. The old town of Ste. Geneviève was originally located three miles southeast of its present day location. In 1785, the new town of Ste. Geneviève was formed on higher grounds northwest of it's old location after many encounters with high floods from the Mississippi River.
