BIG BAND BASH AT SPRINGFIELD ARMORY NHS

SPRINGFIELD, MA –Springfield Armory National Historic Site recreates the big band era with a free outdoor concert by the 14-piece O-Tones Big Band on Saturday, July 21^st.The Big Band "bash" includes exciting activities that feature swing dance lessons at 5:30pm, two 1940's dance routines, and the O-Tones Big Band concert from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

The O-Tones have performed to sell-out crowds throughout New England for 20 years. Their program will include music by the Gershwin brothers, Irving Berlin, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman.In fact, Goodman himself performed at Springfield Armory in 1943.

"As Benny Goodman's concert honored Springfield Armory's war workers, it is a fitting tribute to continue to recognize the important history of Springfield Armory with this event," said James Woolsey, Superintendent of Springfield Armory National Historic Site. "Everyone is sure to have a great time enjoying the show!"

Jitterbug School of Social Dance, of Feeding Hills, will start off the event at 5:30pm with free swing dance lessons held on a large outdoor dance floor.Pre-concert and intermission shows will feature the Small Planet Dancers from Springfield.Dressed in 1940's Army uniforms, the 12 member troupe will recreate a World War II U.S.O. show.

The concert will be held on the green in front of the Museum. Bring a chair or blanket, enjoy picnic suppers, or purchase items from food vendors on site.The Museum, which is wheelchair accessible, will be open until the concert begins at 6:30pm and during intermission. In the case of rain, the concert will move into the theater in Building 2 (Scibelli Hall) of Springfield Technical Community College.

Parking is free, and handicapped-accessible shuttle service will be available for the duration of the event. For pedestrians, the gate at the corner of Byers and State Streets will be open until 6:30pm, and the gate further up State Street will be open all evening.

The Springfield Armory NHS is the location of the Nation's first Armory (1794 – 1968) and was established by George Washington. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm and includes historic grounds, buildings, and the world's largest historic American military firearms collection.
