Experience History, Live Reenactments, Military Demonstrations and More on August 29!
Springfield, Mass.—Springfield Armory National Historic Site’s Forging Freedom: Celebrating 250 Years of American Military Manufacturing special event on Aug. 29 promises the public a day filled with excitement, education, and community spirit. The festivities are part of National Park Week, Aug. 22-30, which features countless natural, cultural and recreational opportunities available in more than 400 national parks across the country.
“The Springfield Armory has stood as a symbol of American ingenuity, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom for 250 years,” said Superintendent Kelly Fellner. “We are excited to welcome the community to celebrate this milestone, honor our history, and inspire future generations with the spirit of innovation and service that defines our nation.”
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors will witness history come alive through historic re-enactments, and blank fire demonstrations. Try traditional hand woodworking with TradesUp, and view the artistry from blacksmiths, tinsmiths, and modern gun engravers from Colt and Smith & Wesson. Attendees can get up close to military vehicles representing every branch of the service, and marvel as a Black Hawk helicopter lands on the Armory Green—a highlight not to be missed.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. will mark completion of a $650,000 project to increase universal accessibility of the park’s main building, which houses the visitor center, museum, collections and offices, via the construction of a new permanent ramp and entrance.
The festivities continue with a special live performance by the 102nd Army Band RipChord playing a variety of rock and roll music from 4-6p.m. Bring a chair or blanket and get ready to dance on the green to cap off a memorable day.
In addition to the main events, Forging Freedom will feature Junior Ranger programs, free ice cream, and distribution of free national park passes for military members and veterans.
