Annual Spatial Data Requirement for Researchers at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks require that all researchers annually provide information on where they have actually conducted their research. We are collecting this information to accurately report the impact of research activities, which often will be less than the permitted impact. Your cooperation is essential to ensure that the parks are able to support research activities in the future.

  • Research location information must be provided to the research permit coordinator by March 31 of the year following the issuance of the permit or by the time a new or renewal permit is requested, whichever is earlier.

  • Researchers who fail to provide this information will not be approved for future permits or renewals.

  • If any of the locations of your research are sensitive and/or protected from disclosure by law (caves, archaeological sites, etc.), please contact the permit coordinator before sending the data. In certain cases, we will request general location information due to these data security issues.

  • Otherwise, please provide point, line, or polygon data for locations of your actual research.

  • Name your file with the following information at a minimum: LastName_ StudyNumber_year_Park (Park = SEKI or DEPO). Please do not send us something that does not have your name and study as part of the file name. Also including key metadata within the file is preferred.

  • We prefer to receive this information in shapefile or ESRI geodatabase format for the locations of your research. If you do not have access to GIS, then we would like to receive the data as an Excel file.

  • All spatial data must have a coordinated system defined (e.g., UTM or Lat/Long, NAD83 or WGS84 datum), but our preference is to receive data in UTM NAD83 Zone 11N.

  • If your research involved different types/degrees of impacts, please either include the impact information in the attribute table or divide your data into multiple datasets named by impact (without this information, the highest level of impact will be used for all locations). Examples are provided below.

  • We expect permitted researchers to be able to provide georeferenced spatial information in most cases. In limited cases, if you are unable to provide spatial data with reasonable effort [for example, if you are a student without access to a Global Position System (GPS) or Geographic Information System (GIS)], please provide locations indicated on a map (preferred) and as a narrative description. Be specific as possible in the narrative, including the type of information in the example below, and give estimated area of area impacted by each type of impact. You must contact the permit coordinator as soon as possible to discuss this limitation.

Installation Types: Animal tags/collar, camera, computer, datalogger, enclosure, exclosure, flagging, plot markers, probes, traps, telephone, tree tags, water samplers, weather station, well, etc.

Collection Types: animal sign (tracks, hair, etc.), data, ground water, invertebrates, listed species, nonvascular plants, other biota, photographs, rocks/minerals, snow, surface water, vascular plants – collected, vascular plants – tagged, vertebrates-collected, vertebrates-tagged, etc.
