Scattering cremated human remains (“cremains”) in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks should be a small private activity, held away from high visitor-use areas. A permit is not required, but all park regulations, including those below, must be followed in order to protect the park’s natural resources from potential damage or alteration:
-
All cremains to be scattered must have been processed by pulverization after cremation.
-
Scattering of cremains by persons on the ground must be performed at least 100 yards from any trail, road, developed facility, or body of water.
-
Scattering cremains from the air must be performed at a minimum altitude of 2000 feet above ground level, and may not be performed over developed areas, facilities, or bodies of water.
-
No markers or memorials are permitted.
-
No publicity may be given to this activity.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are under federal jurisdiction and are, therefore, sovereign in its lands and not subject to the limitations regarding land use by the State of California.
