Facebook Photo Contest Rules

2017 Facebook Photo Contest

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Rules of the Contest

Six prizes will be awarded this year for the best photos of the following subjects:
1) Wilderness
2) Wildlife
3) Sequoias
4) Other photos
5) Find Your Park! (Photos that represent how you “Find Your Park” and why you love Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.)
6) Fan Favorite: While a panel selected by the parks will judge the first five categories, our fans might enjoy a chance to weigh in as well. You can like as many photos as you want in this category. The photo with the most “likes” will win the “Fan Favorite“. See below for more details.

Any photo(s) submitted to the contest must have been taken in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks or must show land within Sequoia and/or Kings Canyon National Parks.

We reserve the right to remove any photo for any reason. Inappropriate photos will be deleted (e.g., anything illegal, feeding or harassing wildlife, swimming in an unsafe area, images showing contradiction of the rules or the family-friendly spirit of the contest, etc.).

Do not submit photos that clearly identify people. This opens multiple legal issues about whether or not the people in the photo have granted permission to have their image used in a public forum.

For photos that show people who are unidentifiable, people must demonstrate good stewardship of the parks and enjoy the parks in a manner consistent with the laws, rules, and mission of the National Park Service.

Photos with text, including copyright, watermark, or other text overlays will not be considered in the contest.

We will start accepting submissions on March 13th, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. PST. The last possible time to submit a photo will be March 27, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. PST.

Each fan may submit up to three photos. There’s no need to choose categories for the photos. To avoid confusion, we’ll consider every photo for at least one and up to four prizes, depending on its subject matter, plus this year’s “Find Your Park” prize. Our Facebook fans will choose the winner of the “Fan Favorite” prize.

Every photo entry that the parks receive as part of the contest becomes the parks’ property. Submitting photos to the contest releases them into the public domain. The parks will have non-exclusive, unlimited use of the photo(s), and can share those rights with other agencies, organizations, media outlets, and others. Credit may sometimes be given for photos, but people submitting photos should not expect their photos to be credited.

Submissions must include the text outlined in “How to Submit a Photo” section. Including this text shows us that you have read and understand the contest rules, intend to have your photo be part of the contest, and understand that by submitting photos to this contest, you agree that the National Park Service has the right to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, distribute or display and use these materials in whole or in part, for government and non-government purposes, in any manner or media (whether now existing or created in the future), in perpetuity, and in all languages throughout the world; these rights can be shared with other agencies, organizations, and businesses. Use of this material shall include, but not be limited to, audiovisual programs, museum exhibits, websites, publications, product artwork, and project publicity. Additionally, you waive the right to inspect or approve any use of the material and any right to royalties or other compensation arising or related to the use of the material. Credit may sometimes be given for photos, but may not be provided for each use.

Once winners are selected a high-resolution version of the winning photo(s) must be emailed to the park contest coordinator. You still own the photo and may use it however you see fit.

Federal government employees who work in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S.Forest Service, Sequoia Parks Conservancy, and Delaware North Company employees who have a duty station in the parks) and their families are excluded from participating in the contest.

There will be one winner for each prize. Winners will receive the 2018 Sequoia and Kings Canyon Annual Pass. This pass, valued at $50, is valid for Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and the Hume Lake District of Sequoia National Forest/Giant Sequoia National Monument. It admits up to six passengers in a private vehicle, is valid for one year from month of the official announcement of winners, and is non-transferable. For winners who already own passes or do not live in the immediate area, gift certificates in the amount of $50 for the Sequoia Parks Conservancy bookstore can be chosen as an alternate prize.

How to Submit a Photo:

You can submit your photo(s) to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks’ Facebook account on the wall. You must write “SequoiaKingsNPS Photo Contest 2017 Entry” on the post—not on the photo—for consideration or use the hashtag: #SequoiaKingsNPSPhotoContest2017Entry when submitting your photo(s). In addition, you are encouraged to provide a title and location of the photo. Any photo submitted without “SequoiaKingsNPS Photo Contest 2017 Entry” on the post—not on the photo—or without use of the hashtag: #SequoiaKingsNPSPhotoContest2017Entry will not be considered; you will not be notified to correct your entry for consideration. We currently receive photos from our fans for fun, too. By including “SequoiaKingsNPSPhoto Contest 2017 Entry” and/or hashtag: #SequoiaKingsNPSPhotoContest2017Entry text with your submission, you show us that you have read and understand the contest rules, intend to have your photo be part of the contest, and understand that every photo submission that the parks receive as part of the contest becomes the parks’ property as outlined above.

How Can I Vote for the Fan Favorite?

You may “Like” photo entries when they are posted to the parks’ Facebook wall, but these “Likes” do not count as “Fan Favorite” votes. The park staff will set up a Facebook Photo Contest Album for the contest and fans can “Like” as many photos as they want. The number of photos for the “Fan Favorite” category could be limited based upon quality, appropriateness of the photo, and number of submissions. It may take us some time to get the album up and running. There are a handful of us doing this in addition to our full-time jobs. Please be patient as we work to upload these photos. We will notify our fans as updates occur.

Locations Not in the Park

The following places are not located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks: Hume Lake, Buck Rock, Junction View, Grizzly Falls, Montecito-Sequoia Lodge, Stony Creek, and any areas in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument. Any photos submitted to the contest must have been taken in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks or must show land within Sequoia and/or Kings Canyon National Parks.
