During his lifetime, Augustus Saint-Gaudens met or created sculptures of many well known figures of his day. General William T. Sherman sat for his portrait as did Robert Louis Stevenson. One of Saint-Gaudens' heroes was President Abraham Lincoln, who the sculptor saw in person in 1860 and then again lying in state after Lincoln was assassinated. The Shaw Memorial - The Shaw Memorial remains one of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens' most stirring and celebrated masterpieces and is considered by some to be America's greatest public monument. |
