San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park celebrates annual event on September 29, 2007with free entry and special programming from 9:30am-5:00pm, at the Hyde StreetPier and VisitorCenter.

Hands-On Learning and Volunteerism Highlighted!

Celebrate the 14th annual National Public Lands (NPL) Day on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park with free admission to board the magnificent historic ships at Hyde Street Pier! One-third of America is publicly owned, and this event honors the incredible diversity of our nation’s National Parks and other public lands. All are invited to the park to deepen your understanding of maritime heritage through a variety of free programming.

This special day also promotes public stewardship through volunteerism – integral to the care of America’s natural and cultural resources. Last year 100,000 volunteers throughout the country built trails and bridges, planted native trees, removed trash and invasive plants, as well as numerous other projects at 1,100 locations.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park volunteers will be on hand to showcase maritime arts, trades, and skills. Volunteers contribute to the work of this park through ship preservation efforts and educational presentations for the public. Find out how you can sign up to volunteer!

Admission at many federal sites is free on NPL Day. This includes land managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Forest Service. Both the Department of Interior and Department of Agriculture are committed to promoting citizen stewardship of public lands and increasing volunteer opportunities.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park includes a fleet of historic ships, Visitor Center, and library. The park offers both regular programs and special events.
