San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers a special invitation to explore the magnificent fleet of historic ships at Hyde Street Pier. On all four Mondays in March, 2007, admission to board the historic ships will be free! Both self-guided and ranger-led tours are available aboard three fascinating ships that are all designated National Historic Landmarks. Balclutha-1886 Sailing Ship A rare survivor from the age of sail, this steel-hulled ship navigated the treacherous Cape Horn passage 17 times! Discover the rewards and hardships of the crew who adapted to harsh living conditions and fought for their lives through dangerous storms. Don’t miss “Adventures at Sea,” a 30 minute guided program presented daily at 2:15pm. Eureka-1890 Ferryboat Before there were bridges across San Francisco Bay, this local ferry was instrumental in the development of the Bay Area. Come aboard and discover why the Eureka has always been a passenger favorite! The fine display of classic cars on the main deck will take you back to the 1930’s, when the restaurant on board sold a tasty slice of apple pie for 10 cents. Hercules-1907 Tugboat A rare, tangible link to the age of steam, the Hercules and her triple expansion engine represent the pinnacle of 1907 maritime technology. Although much smaller than the grand Balclutha, this tugboat is famous for her great power and dependability. Imagine the long, slow lazy days on a trip down the Pacific Coast, towing a huge raft of logs and fishing for a dinner of king salmon. Was it an experience of unbearable confinement or relaxing freedom? (Note: Hercules is subject to tide-related closures.)
