SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is excited to announce the selection of Rex Hausmann—a celebrated local contemporary artist—as the 2025 Artist-in-Residence, bringing his vibrant creativity and welcoming spirit to the park and its visitors. The Artist-in-Residence program is a National Park Service-wide initiative that hosts artists in parks to help connect visitors and tell park stories through art. This year’s program is made possible thanks to support from our park partner, Mission Heritage Partners.Contemporary artist Rex Hausmann is a San Antonian who began his art education at UTSA graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design on scholarship with a BFA in painting (2006) and an MFA in painting (2016). His artist philosophy remains simple “Grow Where You Are Planted” displayed behind Phebe, the bougainvillea, on the front his family buildings at The Hausmann Millworks: A Creative Community in downtown San Antonio. Rex has shown and lectured nationally and internationally, appearing in many speaking functions including TEDx San Antonio at Trinity University, McNay Museum of Art, The San Antonio Museum of Art, and The University of Texas at San Antonio as well as The Spencer Museum of Art. He has shown work at The Smithsonian in Washington DC, The Institute of Texan Cultures, Neiman Marcus, The Lawrence Art Center and The Cloister at Sea Island. He has spoken on National Public Radio many times across the United States. His home base remains in San Antonio at The Hausmann Millworks, where he gardens, teaches, and paints daily.
As part of his ten-week residency, the National Park Service and Hausmann will host open studio hours for visitors by and experience his inspiring art-making process. Open studio hours take place every Sunday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, beginning September 21, 2025, at Mission San Juan’s “Tufa House.” Additionally, the park and artist will host two free public workshops.
