Moreno and Reyes Family More Stories

"And we were told, there were no more natives here in San Antonio and we’re like 'We’re Here'. We haven’t gone anywhere, we’re still here, we still exist. Maybe we’re not “pure-bred” like our ancestors but the blood still runs through us even if it’s just a miniscule drop, it’s still there."

Margot explains that after learning more about the Spanish caste system during the colonial period she better understands her great grandmother:

"We try to study some of that history and the caste system for the Spanish, how they would erase some of the Indians’ heritage after you’ve married, then they didn’t even recognize your Indian heritage anymore, you were just considered Spanish. Studying that part was so important to me because it helped me understand her grandmother (she points to her mom), which would have been my great grandmother. Because her grandmother would always fight and say she was not an Indian, but her great-grandfather had been the last governor here. She would always say she was not an Indian."
