What is a "BioBlitz"?

A BioBlitz is a short duration event (usually 24 hours or less) in which teams of scientists, families, students, teachers and park visitors work together to inventory as many species as possible (some BioBlitzes focus on a single taxonomic group). In order to coordinate efforts and synthesize data from parks across the National Park Service (NPS) during the 2016 National Parks BioBlitz, the NPS will be using iNaturalist as the primary data collection tool. Meet the Beetles

Little is known about these amazing insects at Crater Lake. Come join us to help park scientists look for and identify the beetles that live in the park. Our 2016 "BeetleBlitz" will be on Saturday, July 23rd. We will lead field trips to a number of different habitats in the park to look for beetles. Space is limited so you must register by Tuesday, July 5th. Even if you can't help us in the field, you can learn more about beetles and their role in the Crater Lake ecosystem. During the day on Saturday, July 23rd there will be park rangers to show visitors the diversity of beetles we have collected and lead hands-on activities for kids of all ages. Come and join the fun!

How do I participate?

OK... so you will need to do a couple of things to sign up. First you will want to decide what field trips you would like to go on. We have eight different trips to choose from. Once you know which trip you want to go on then you need to register online. The sooner the better. We may have more people wanting to go on the field trips than we can accommodate so field trips will be filled on a first come first served basis. If you have a smart phone you will want to download the iNaturalist app and create an account. Charge up your phone and bring it with you to collect information on the field trips. If you don't have a smart phone, don't worry, you can still participate.
