"My name is Delwyn Spyder Tawvaya. I am 34 years of age and come from the Hopi Tribe. I am of the Snow Clan and reside in Shungopavi Village, Second Mesa, AZ. I am the father of 2 boys, Duwron & Ciyeon Tawvaya. Their mother, my wife and best friend, is Letha Talahaftewa. My interest in learning silversmithing has been with me since I was 10 years old. I grew up watching my uncles create but was never fortunate enough to learn. In April of 2016 I was introduced to the history of the Hopi Overlay Technique by my mentor Gerald Lomaventema and his family. I discovered that my great uncle, Paul Saufkie, along with Fred Kabotie were the inventors of this style of jewelry. This really jumpstarted my willingness to want to learn and carry on my uncle’s vision. This establishment of young new artists and a new jewelry style brought recognition nationwide to the Hopi Tribe. I strive to create jewelry in a manner that revives and preserves language, traditional and religious teachings, and the traditional concept of the Hopi Overlay technique. There is so much to learn, but only time can guide me with that opportunity to take the next step forward. Hopefully someday I will be able to be a mentor to new artists."

Karalee Takala specializes in overlay, and jewlery/basket weaving.

The series at Grand Canyon National Park provides the opportunity for artisans from the park's 11 Traditionally Associated Tribes to share their history and traditional crafts with park visitors. Grand Canyon National Park is pleased to promote awareness and appreciation of the history and diverse cultures of the region. Our demonstrators help connect us to ancient peoples and provide insight into inter-tribal relationships.

This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Association and ArtPlace America.

For more information about the ArtPlace America grant, please visit https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/desert-view-tribal-heritage-grant.htm The grant will further arts and culture at Grand Canyon National Park by transforming Desert View into a place to celebrate, share, and learn about inter-tribal cultural heritage.
