In the Greater Fredericksburg area, the Potomac Heritage Trail includes Stafford County, the city of Fredericksburg, and King George County. The trail is segmented in this region, but opportunities to fill gaps are in progress. Trail users can follow on-road bike routes, nature trails, urban trails, and a scenic bike route.

City of Fredericksburg
In Fredericksburg, Potomac Heritage follows urban trails through downtown Fredericksburg, home to a lively community, a variety of activities, and many recreational opportunities.

Chatham Manor at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park
The trail passes by Chatham Manor, a site sharing the story of The Civil War, slavery, and Reconstruction in the United States.

George Washington's Ferry Farm
The trail follows an onroad bike route that passes by George Washington’s Ferry Farm, where the nation’s first president spent much of his early life. Here, there is a museum with exhibits as well as grounds to explore.

Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail
The Potomac Heritage Trail follows all 16 miles of the heritage trail, the route of the 1940s Dahlgren Branch Rail Line. Cyclists that ride through this section of trail can expect acres of preserved sanctuary for nature.

Government Island
The trail goes around the perimeter of government island, part of a quarry that provided Aquia sandstone used in the construction of the U.S. Capital Building and the White House. The trail follows an elevated boardwalk over a wetland and turns into a relatively flat dirt path around the island.
