See the inside of a rustic lockhouse–at midnight–when you spend the night in historic Lockhouse 6, enjoying the solitude and quiet evenings just like a lockkeeper’s family did. With a stop in Potomac, MD, you can pack in provisions for a memorable candle-lit meal canalside. Not too far upstream from Lockhouse 6 are the renowned Great Falls of the Potomac; it’s an easy 5-mile bike ride. This overnight in a lockkeeper’s house comes courtesy of the Canal Quarters program hosted by the C&O Canal Trust. Once you’re packed in to the Lockhouse, it’s time for a short ride to Great Falls Tavern. While you’re there, take a ride along the C&O Canal in a boat pulled by mules. Take a hike on the Gold Mine Loop or along the River Trail, before biking back to your lockhouse. See C&O Canal National Historical Park for more activities at Great Falls. On the way back to your Quarters, stop to explore the Marsden Tract, just downriver from the MacArthur Blvd. parking area. There are amazing views upriver. Or stop at Carderock Recreation Area to explore the cliffs. A short hike below the bluffs takes you to river level and nice views of Stubblefield Falls. Enjoy your evening at your own Canal Quarters!
