Accessibility Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan

The preparation of an accessibility self-evaluation and transition plan is mandated by regulations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as they apply to the US Department of the Interior. Public entities are required to evaluate their current programs, policies, and practices dealing with accessibility and to develop a strategy for making the necessary changes to improve them.

The NPS has released a draft Accessibility Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan for Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial for a 30-day public review and comment period from 11/7 – 12/7/2024. The draft plan:

  • Documents existing barriers to accessibility
  • Provides recommendations for improving in-park access
  • Proposes timeframes to implement changes

Suggested improvements include:

  • Providing an accessible shuttle loading zone, restroom, and route to the water's edge
  • Improving surfaces and slopes of parking, circulation routes, clear spaces around interpretive site elements, and the memorial plaza
  • Addressing gaps in programmatic accessibility
