Join the Marin Chapter California Native Plant Society's "Third Thursday Weeders" to spend a day at beautiful Point Reyes and help tackle agressive, introduced plants that threaten important plant habitat in Point Reyes National Seashore.
You have probably heard the exciting news: after fifteen months of rehabilitation, the Point Reyes Lighthouse is once again open. Thus, the Third Thursday Weeders will be able to work beyond (west of) the lighthouse visitors' parking lot and see how previously treated areas look now.
The November 21 workday will probably focus on weeding out iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis) along the road between the gate and the apartments. lf you haven't had a chance to do so recently, also check out the swales we've been working further east, near the sand drift. Between the efforts of the Third Thursday Weeders, the Sunday Habitat Restoration Program, and the generous donation by Volunteers of California working with Clif Bar of a rented debris box to remove iceplant piles, the zone is looking good.
The Weeders will meet at the Lighthouse parking lot at 9:30 am, work until 1 pm, and enjoy lunch on site afterwards, with a chance to see the rehabilitation and check for whales. Please plan for variable weather conditions, wear close-toed shoes and long pants, and bring at least two liters of water, snacks, and lunch.

Please email Ellen Hamingson to RSVP for the November 21 workday. For this workday to proceed, we need to have at least four confirmed participants by 4 pm on Wednesday, November 20. Ellen will send a follow-up email Wednesday afternoon to those who sign up confirming the workday. If you sign up and then have to cancel on Thursday, please leave Ellen a voicemail (not email) before 8 am on November 21.
Please bring warm and wind-stopping layers, rain gear if the forecast warrants it, at least two liters of water, snacks, and/or lunch, and clothes that can get dirty. Tools and gloves will be provided.
The Third Thursday Weeders meet on the third Thursday of most months at 9:30 am, usually at a trailhead near the work location. (Please note: There will not be a workday on Thursday, December 19, 2019, or on January 16, 2020. Check back in early February 2020 to confirm whether there will be a workday on Thursday, February 20, 2020.) They visit beautiful sites to conduct important follow-up removal to maintain and enhance large-scale restoration projects. The workday usually involves a chance to view native plants—often including rare species—that are recolonizing the areas. Be sure to check this page or contact us every month in the week prior to the workday for the latest details concerning where to meet.
If you are interested in helping restore habitat at Point Reyes, but can't participate on Thursdays, join us for Habitat Restoration Program workdays, which are held on either the second or last Sunday of the most months.
California Invasive Species Action Week
The 2019 California Invasive Species Action Week was observed from Saturday, June 1, through Sunday, June 9, 2019. The goal of the Action Week is to increase public awareness and promote public participation in California's fight against invasive species. There are numerous ways for people to participate, either independently, or as part of an organized effort. For example, you can learn which invasive species are issues in your area, remove invasives from your property, select native plants for your garden, harvest them for food, or volunteer to remove invasives from a participating park.
California Invasive Species Action Week Youth Art Contest
Kids, you can learn about an invasive species that threatens your favorite outdoor place, and enter the Department of Fish and Wildlife's "Say No to Nutria!" youth art contest. The deadline for entries was May 15, 2019, and winners were announced during the Action Week! The CISAW Schedule of Events will be filled with volunteer opportunities and events hosted by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, California's National and State Parks, and dedicated volunteer programs and organizations across the state.
