Description

Since its establishment on August 25, 1916, the National Park Service has cared for extraordinary historic and cultural sites that are pivotal parts of the American narrative. Parks and our programs can be places of healing and reconciliation. On Pennsylvania Avenue and at parks across the country, we will commemorate the landing of enslaved Africans 400 years ago in August 1619 In the British colony of Virginia, at what is now Fort Monroe National Monument

We honor this powerful moment in American history and the significance of four centuries of African American history and culture by ringing bells for four minutes, one for each century.

Join a Park Ranger at the Benjamin Franklin statue after the bell-ringing for a discussion of the 400th anniversary commemoration.
