Demonstration locations can vary, so when you arrive, ask at Desert View's outdoor visitor center, under the large shade structure, just beyond the north end of the main parking lot. Park rangers are staffing an information desk there, from 9 am to 4 pm (as staffing allows).

In the event of bad weather, the demonstrations may be held in the Watchtower building.

Phyllis Coonsis Phyllis is a Zuni tribe member of the Sun Clan. She has lived her whole life in Zuni Pueblo and is a third-generation artist, having learned skills from various family members including her older siblings. Phyllis’s grandmother inspired her to continue her artwork and showed her that she was able to support herself and her family. Over the years, Phyllis has developed her silversmithing skills and has learned how to make squash blossoms, necklaces, and Concho belts. Each piece she tries to apply contemporary style while still maintaining traditional Zuni designs.

Gwen Setalla comes from a family of potters who have passed down the skill from generation to generation. Her family taught her how to gather and process the clay, prepare paints, and fire the finished product with sheep dung. Her designs come from the old pottery shards found in the villages of Awatowi and Kawikaa. Gwen creates very fine-lined designs that compliment her yucca handled canteens and wedding vases. Gwen shares a strong commitment to preserving traditional Hopi pottery by teaching pottery demonstrations and lectures.

  • The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.

  • This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
