Description
Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park (CEBE) is offering a ranger-led walking tour of the Third Winchester Battlefield on Thursday, September 19, 2024. This 2-hour tour will begin at 2:00 pm. Meet at the West Woods trailhead of the Third Winchester Battlefield Park, 180 Getty Lane, Winchester VA. Parking is available in-between the TownHouse Suites Hotel Winchester and Dollar Tree.
A bloody and decisive fight in September 1864, the Third Battle of Winchester established the Federal Army of the Shenandoah under Gen. Philip Sheridan as a threat to Confederate control of the Shenandoah Valley. Join us for a 3-mile (4.8 km) walking tour from flank to flank along the Confederate defensive line. The tour will visit several areas of intense combat preserved by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, including the site of the mortal wounding of a Confederate general. Along the route of a successful Federal counterattack, visitors will see battlefield monuments and an artillery battery.
This tour is free and open to the public. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable footwear.
