River Raisin National Battlefield Park will be offering a series of Ranger-Led Programs this summer. All of these programs will begin and end at the at Battlefield’s Visitor Center located at 1403 E. Elm Ave., Monroe, Michigan, 48162.
“Remembering the Raisin: Past, Present & Future” will be offered for each Saturday in September from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. September 7, 14, 21 and 28th.
On this brief walking tour, participants will learn how the frontier settlement of Frenchtown was established, how the settlement and its residents were impacted by the War of 1812, and how the land became industrialized after the war ended. Rangers will then explain how the River Raisin National Battlefield Park came into existence and review the plans we have for expanding the site and offering a world-class, hands-on, living history experience.
There is no admission for this program and reservations are not required. Simply stop by at the Visitor Center’s front desk a few minutes ahead of time to finalize where the walk will begin. This ranger-led walk will last no longer than 30 minutes and will cover about ¼ mile. Participants will be walking on a combination of paved sidewalks and a crushed stone path. Comfortable walking shoes, dressing in layers, and wearing a hat or cap is recommended. Bringing a water bottle for each person in your party is also advised. This walk will be offered rain or shine; however, in the event of thunderstorms or other severe weather, the Park Ranger will have participants seek shelter and either wait out the storm or cancel the walk. Friendly dogs kept on a leash are welcome to join the program.
