Description
New Orleans JAZZ NHP's Song o' the Day:
"Many Thousan’ Gone"
Today, March 25th, is Remember Slavery Day, or the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, to be specific. You can hear the Secretary General of the United Nations declare it so on UN Web TV, today, and there is info in abundance regarding slavery in our country and the “free-market” apparatus that facilitated it.
The NPS is not silent on the matter, either, with a list of no less than 32 African American Heritage Sites, some of which explore Slavery and Abolition and others specific to the Underground Railroad – a courageous attempt to mitigate that transatlantic slave trade travesty. The National Parks Conservation Association even cites our own New Orleans JAZZ NHP in an article entitled, “Learn About Black History in 7 Unexpected Places”.
Today’s Park-produced song is “unique as it speaks directly to the experience of enslavement. No coded meaning is necessary, and its lyrics speak to what thousands of fugitive slaves would have been willing to risk to escape—their lives.” (from the liner notes)
