It Fell Like a Driving Rainstorm: Union Field Artillery Actions at Fort Donelson, 1862
Experience the power of Civil War field artillery as National Park Service volunteers and Rangers describe what life was like for artillerymen on the battlefield in 1862. These thirty-minute artillery firing programs will be presented near the Fort Donelson National Battlefield Visitor Center at 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. on May 28, 2022.
Fighting at Fort Donelson often proved difficult for even the most fit and capable artilleryman. One artillery captain described the battlefield as chiefly covered with dense woods and stumps, with Union field positions hidden under the cover of the thick undergrowth. Assaulting Union artillery positions sometimes proved difficult; Confederate battery captains had to “follow the progress of the fight more with the ear than the eye.” Although conditions were not always ideal, field artillery played an important role as battle raged in the forests and ravines around the small town of Dover.
