Joseph Slade was the division superintendent for the division of the Pony Express that went from Fort Kearny to Horseshoe Creek station. His reputation as a "mean and sadistic bully" was strengthened by his feud with and killing of the Julesburg station keeper, Jules Reni. Slade was hanged on March 9, 1864 for the crime.
