Sand Point Beach is a popular spot for sunbathing or walking in the evening while enjoying the sunset over Munising Bay. Swimmers often find the shallow bay water here somewhat warmer than other lakeshore beaches. Small boats can be carried from the parking lot and launched from the beach. Leashed pets permitted on beach and in the water.
In summer and early fall, a Mobi mat allows wheelchair access from the parking lot across the beach all the way to the water's edge. Also, a free accessible viewing scope is installed at the beach each summer.
The beach is across from the Sand Point Marsh Trail, a 1/2 mile wheelchair-accessible interpretive trail that traverses a beautiful wetland area. This trail is one of the best locations in the park for birding. Also watch for frogs, turtles, and even beavers along the trail. No pets allowed.
A second beach area is at the end of the road, about 1/4 mile past the main beach. Pink sand from crushed garnet eroded from the cliffs and washed in by the current is often visible on this beach. Park headquarters is also located at the end of Sand Point. Artifacts from the era of the Munising U.S. Coast Guard Station are on display in the nearby free boathouse museum during the summer.
Sand Point and its beach areas are accessible by regular vehicle all year long since the road and parking lots are plowed in winter. The vault toilet at Sand Point Beach is open year-round.
