Mitchell Hill is one of the newest additions to the San Juan Island National Historical Park which acquired this property from Washington State in 2015. Mitchell Hill contains historical remnants of the Old Military Road which connected English Camp and American Camp during the joint occupation of San Juan Island. The Old Military Road built upon an existing network known as the Cowichan Road which was built by Native American contractors working for the Belle Vue Sheep Farm who used the road to connect their various pastures. The 312 acres of the Mitchell Hill area contain excellent trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
The trails in this area feed into a larger network of trails known as the Roche Harbor Highlands trail system]. You can hike from here to the top of Young Hill, visit the Royal Marines Cemetery, or go to the English Camp Parade Grounds, where you can hike the Bell Point Trail or the Westcott Bay Trail. Mitchell Hill trails are confusing, however, so it is best if you download a trail map before you go!
