Trading Sites on the Trail

Once Kansas opened to American trade and settlement, ranches were established along the Santa Fe Trail. These stations were usually located at stream crossings or where cattle and horses could obtain water.  They were about a day's journey or ten to fifteen miles apart.

Aside from road ranches, there were no places to resupply out on the prairie. Ranches offered supplies to trail travelers in the form of provisions, liquor, and livestock feed as well as entertainment.  Ranches also made a perfect mail stop. Regular monthly U.S. mail service began on July 1, 1850 between Independence and Santa Fe.
