Chilton Park in Dodge City, Kansas, lies directly on the historic route of the Santa Fe Trail and serves as both a commemorative site and a community gathering space. The park is officially recognized by the National Park Service as a site on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.
A key feature of Chilton Park is a monument dedicated to Major Robert Hall Chilton, unveiled on May 28, 1931. Chilton was a U.S. Army officer tasked with protecting travelers and wagon trains along the Santa Fe Trail during the mid-19th century. The monument stands on “Beacon Hill,” once a vantage point used for Indian signals and military sentinels from Chilton’s camp.
Through its interpretive monument and location on the Trail corridor, Chilton Park offers visitors a tangible connection to the military efforts that ensured safe passage along this vital commercial and migration route.
