Explore Virginius and Hall's Islands to discover how nature has reclaimed a place that was once full of factories and mills, canals and homes. Despite frequent flooding, remnants of historic features remain, including the industrial ruins of cotton and flour mills, remnants of historic waterways, and residential structures. Interpretive signs explain how this once bustling industrial village was powered by water.
These trails offer great opportunities to see the Shenandoah River, spring wildflowers, birds, and river wildlife. While beautiful all year round, spring is a particularly popular time to visit Virginius Island, which is carpeted in bluebells for a few weeks each year.
The Virginius and Hall's Island trails can be accessed from Lower Town or from the Lower Town Trail, which begins at the Visitor Center.
- Dogs must remain on leash.
- Cycling is not allowed on Virginius and Hall's Islands.
- An active railroad passes through Virginius and Hall's Islands. Please use caution when crossing railroad tracks.
