Pipestone National Monument News Release Immediate Release: August 12, 2016 Contact: CodyGoraczkowski email:e-mail us Phone: 507-825-5464 ext.213 Pipestone National Monument Celebrates National Park Service Centennial and Gathering Pipestone, MN: In celebration of the National Park Service Centennial, Pipestone National Monument is hosting an Open House at the visitor center on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 8am to 5pm. The Pipestone Indian Shrine Association will provide complimentary refreshments to visitors at the Pipestone National Monument Visitor Center between 11 am and 2 pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to walk onthe Circle Trail, watch the "Pipestone Unbroken Legacy", visit the museum tolearn about our history, quarrying, tall grass prairie, and much more! The National Park Service has been celebrating its Centennial throughout 2016; however, the actual birthday is on Thursday August 25. In honor of the Centennial, all national park areas will be fee free from Thursday August 25th to August 28th, 2016. Free entrance into Pipestone National Monument is being offered on this date for the National Park Service Birthday. Superintendent Glen H. Livermont stated "We invite everyone to join usin celebrating the National Park Service's 100th birthday and toconsider the value and importance of all our national parks". There will be aGathering of the 23 affiliated tribes and everyone is invited to participate.Phil Burnham, a well-known author, will be speaking at 2 pm. We encourage families to come and enjoy the day and the children can participate in the Junior Ranger activities ongoing all day. The Monument offers youth the opportunity to jointhe National Park Service Family as Junior Rangers. During their park visit, interested youth complete activities focusing on the natural and cultural resources of the Monument. They will receive an official Junior Ranger badge and Junior Ranger certificate. Additionally, a Centennial Activity Book will be available that, when completed, entitles Junior Rangers to an additional special addition Centennial Junior Ranger badge. All youth receiving a Junior Ranger badge theday of the centennial will be eligible to enter a raffle to win Junior Rangergear such as a backpack, vest, or hat! National Parks are America's Best Idea, and there are more than 400 parks available to everyone, everyday. The fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place oran old favorite, especially one of the 127 national parks that normally chargean entrance fee.
