Pipestone National Monument Guest Speaker Series Pipestone, MN: Glen Livermont, Superintendent, at Pipestone National Monument, announces the Second presentation in this year's Guest Speaker Series at the Pipestone Performing Arts Center, Pipestone, Minnesota, on Saturday, March 15th, from 2:00pm to 4:00 pm. Guest speaker, Richard Meyers, PhD. will discuss "Embodying Cultural Heritage Through Higher Education." There will be a question and answer session following the lecture. Dr. Meyers will discuss the work he is doing for South Dakota State University (SDSU). SDSU is the flagship institution of higher education with the largest amount of students in South Dakota. Since August of 2012, SDSU has been committed to developing its American Indian Studies program along with the American Indian Education and Cultural Center (AIECC). Through collaborative efforts, SDSU is seeking to build relationships with tribal stakeholders and governmental agencies to help advance knowledge on issues pertaining to sacred sites and ethno-historical understandings of complicated cultural interfaces. Both the American Indian Studies program and the AIECC Student Services programs are committed to forging a space and curriculum that works with nine federally recognized tribes to enhance students' awareness of moving in between the local to the national and global spaces of understanding social and cultural issues. The AIECC houses the American Indians Studies program and exists to nurture knowledge on culture and heritage. Dr. Meyers is a professionally trained cultural anthropologist with an emphasis in sociolinguistics and cognitive functions of the mind. As a cultural anthropologist he explores human identity and the ways people's identities manifest within language and the articulations in that context. Dr. Meyers is currently the Tribal Relations Director, Program Coordinator & Lecturer in American Indian Studies at SDSU. He served as an editor/writer for the Office of the Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. He earned his PhD at Arizona State University (2007). Dr. Meyers is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
