Pipestone National Monument Guest Speaker Series Pipestone, MN: Glen Livermont, Superintendent, at Pipestone National Monument, announces the third presentation in this year's Guest Speaker Series. Guest speakers, Dr. Theodore Catton and Dr. Diane Krahe, will be talking about indigenous Maori Sacred Sites and the National Parks of New Zealand at the Pipestone Performing Arts Center, Pipestone, Minnesota, on Friday, January 18th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. In 2012, Theodore Catton and spouse, Diane Krahe, traveled to New Zealandon a Fulbright Grant to study the country's national parks. New Zealand's 14 national parks, which comprise more than ten percent of its land mass, showcase this island nation's scenic beauty and unique ecology. In their slide presentation, a comparison will be made between sacred sites in the New Zealand National Parks and those in the United States National Parks, with an emphasis on the sacred quarries at Pipestone National Monument. Dr. Theodore Catton is an associate research professor in the History Department at the University of Montana and is the author of numerous books, articles, and reports on the national parks, includingInhabited Wilderness: Indians, Eskimos, and National Parks in Alaska, and National Park, City Playground: Mount Rainier in the Twentieth Century. Dr. Diane L. Krahe is an assistant research professor of history at the same institution. She has written extensively on federal land management issues and is an expert on the history of Indian tribal wilderness in the twentieth century. She has a PhD in history from Washington State University and an MS in environmental studies from the University of Montana. Currently, Dr. Catton and Dr. Krahe teach as adjunct faculty in the History Department at the University of Montana and prepare book-length reports for the National Park Service through both their faculty institution and their home business, Environmental History Workshop.
