Pipestone National Monument was set aside in 1937 for its unique cultural resource: pipestone. In this area, you can learn more about the geology of Pipestone in Geologic Formations and in Glaciers / Glacial Features. In preserving access to this important stone for native cultures, Pipestone National Monument has also come to protect a threatened tallgrass prairie ecosystem.
