Many people, when asked to name the most famous generals of the Civil War, will say the names, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. The two officers played prominent roles in one of the most destructive events of this nation's history, however, the two generals never really faced off against each other until the Overland Campaign and into the Siege of Petersburg. Each officer was known for being level headed, and had earned a great deal of respect among the common soldier. To gain a better understanding of each officer's strategy during the siege, consider reading Chris Calkins' article, "Petersburg: The Wearing Down of Lee's Army". This is one of many educational resources which can be found on American Battlefield Trust website. |
