| George Mossholder was born in Ohio in 1840 as the second eldest of John and Mary Mossholder. According to the 1860 United States Federal Census, George’s mother remarried and the family moved to Marshall, Indiana, where he started work as a farmer. Mossholder enlisted as a private in Company, 29th Indiana Infantry on August 29, 1861, in La Porte, Indiana. The 29th Indiana Infantry mustered into service on August 27, 1861, in La Porte, Indiana. Mossholder and his comrades joined Gen. Don Carlos Buell’s Army of the Ohio in Kentucky. 1862 saw them march south into Tennessee, fight the Battle of Shiloh, besiege Corinth, Mississippi, and march across northern Alabama returning to Bluegrass State in pursuit of Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s invading army. The 22nd Indiana returned to Nashville, Tennessee in November 1862, and joined the Army of the Cumberland as it marched to Murfreesboro on December 26, 1862. During the Battle of Stones River, the 29th Indiana Infantry was set on the right flank of the Union Army in Gen. Edward Kirk’s brigade. They took heavy Confederate artillery fire before a wave of gray clad soldiers crashed into their lines and left the shattered remnant unable to fight the rest of the day. Private Mossholder was injured during the onslaught and passed away from his wounds the next day. George Mossholder is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in an unknown grave. |
