National Park Service CORONADO NATIONAL MEMORIAL
Arizona

Location: Cochise County, on Montezuma Canyon Road, about 30 miles west of Bisbee; address, 4101 East Montezuma Canyon Road, Hereford, AZ 85615.

Coronado NMem
East Entrance, Coronado National Memorial.

This memorial is located along the United States-Mexico border near the point where the great Spanish expedition under Francisco Vásquez de Coronado entered the present United States in 1540. It commemorates the first major European exploration of the U.S. Southwest—only one-half century after Columbus' discovery of America and more than one-half century before the first permanent English settlement, at Jamestown. Coronado Peak affords a sweeping view of the country through which the expedition marched. Exhibits along the footpath to the peak provide information on the expedition and the natural features of the region. The memorial was established by Presidential proclamation in November 1952.
