Ozark National Scenic Riverways is pleased to announce the upcoming restoration of the Big Spring Lodge and Cabins and surrounding Historic District, which will begin in 2015.
When the energetic young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the now historic Big Spring Lodge and Cabins, their task was a mighty undertaking. In the spirit of their original efforts, the National Park Service is undertaking a major revitalization of their work. The project will involve extensive restoration and preservation of the original timber and stone construction, as well as major upgrades to deteriorating utility systems and fixtures. Modern amenities and conveniences will be incorporated, while still retaining the rustic charm that makes the area so special.
Due to the broad scope of this project, the Big Spring Lodge and Cabins will be closed for an extended period beginning in 2015. This will allow the project to be completed more efficiently and safely, while eliminating the possibility of inconveniencing our visitors or disturbing their solitude. It will also enable us to more quickly restore the area to a full operation that will provide greater enjoyment for our visitors.
When restoration is complete we envision that visitors will be able to enjoy not only improved lodging and dining facilities, but also additional recreational opportunities such as new hiking and biking trails, johnboat tours, and interpretive exhibits.
Big Spring, the campground, pavilions, boat ramp, and nearby hiking trails will remain open as usual throughout the course of this project.
